Subaru Corporation has installed a local sub-6 5G standalone network covering the entire circuit at Bifuka Proving Ground in the Subaru R&E Center (Hokkaido, Japan), and is using it to trial cooperative driving automation.

Overseeing this advanced research, the center has previously worked on automated driving systems using mobile communications. In these trials, it will newly harness the high-speed connectivity environment provided by the local 5G SA network to test coordination control, including merging and other maneuvers by multiple automated vehicles, and remote vehicle control.

Enabling these operations are seven sub-6 wireless base stations installed around the circuit that together enable remote control for cooperative driving automation throughout the entire area. The equipment consists of the Nokia Digital Automation Cloud (NDAC) system from Nokia Solutions and Networks Japan G.K., and was installed by Subaru with support from NS Solutions Corp.

Through the project, Subaru is ultimately aiming to accelerate its R&D efforts while working towards its goal of reducing accidents and delivering ‘enjoyment and peace of mind’ for the future of mobility.
