WeRide has officially unveiled its latest generation of Robotaxi, the GXR. The Chinese autonomous technology company has said that the new model represents one of the most spacious production robotaxi models launched to date.

As a production-ready robotaxi, the GXR offers a full redundancy system incorporating WeRide’s vehicle architecture, Fail-Operational steer-by-wire chassis, computing units, and braking systems. Together, WeRide expects these technologies to both prevent single-point failures and ensure passenger safety.

The GXR’s new Sensor Suite 5.6 features a compact, aerodynamic, design featuring more than 20 sensors. Here, the suite offers a high-performance, low-cost LiDAR; high-definition high-dynamic cameras; and an RTK high-precision inertial navigation set with 360° blind-spot-free perception, and 200-meter front detection. The robotaxi also offers a length of 5,018 mm, with an interior cabin height of 1,340 mm and a 3,100mm wheelbase. In removing the vehicle’s front passenger seat, WeRide is aiming to maximise its ‘space efficiency’.

Featuring a hidden B-pillar design, the GRX allows the front door and sliding side door to open simultaneously. Reaching up to 1,831 mm in width and 1,285 mm in height, this functionality aims to make the robotaxi easier for passengers to enter and exit. A carry-on luggage area inside can accommodate at least one backpack, and one 22-inch suitcase. Passengers can load the luggage and board the vehicle through a single door opening.

In terms of safety, a top priority for WeRide, the GXR’s features a soft-edged design to provide ‘baby-level’ safety care. At the same time, each door has emergency exit signage, while the center console contains a stop button and a safety hammer for emergency needs.

While WeRide has not yet highlighted when or where the GXR will launch first, the company highlighted that (once available) passengers will be able to use its WeRide Go mobile app to hail the robotaxi to their nearest pickup point, and set their end destination. In the future, WeRide envisions GXR facilitating travel for solo business trips, family vacations, and friend gatherings.
