WeRide has launched its driverless robotaxi trial operations in Abu Dhabi, representing its first deployment in the Middle East region. From this quarter, a fleet of the autonomous technology company’s Robotaxi models will be piloted on public roads without a safety driver behind the wheel.

Under this new driverless phase, WeRide will also be extending the scope of its robotaxi service in the region to cover Al Maryah Island, the city’s financial hub housing the Abu Dhabi Global Market, and Al Reem Island, a vibrant residential district. These new zones build on WeRide’s existing Robotaxi network, which has served Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, and routes connecting to Zayed International Airport since 2021.

The UAE represents a key market for WeRide, having received its first national license for self-driving in vehicles in 2023, which authorized the testing and operation of autonomous vehicles on public roads nationwide. In December 2024, WeRide and Uber jointly launched a ride-hailing partnership in Abu Dhabi, that utilizes commercial robotaxis.

Following the rollout of its driverless robotaxi trial in Abu Dhabi, WeRide expects commercial driverless rides and additional service areas to be introduced from summer 2025 (subject to regulatory approval).
