Waymo has announced that its autonomous ride-hailing service, Waymo One, will roll out to the public in Washington D.C. in 2026.

Ahead of this rollout, the Alphabet subsidiary is looking to gradually introduce itself to both the District’s communities and its emergency responders. During this time, Waymo will also work closely with local policymakers to formalize the regulations needed to operate without a human behind the wheel in the District.

The autonomous technology and ride-hailing company’s announcement follows its deployments in San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles and Austin, as well as its other forthcoming deployments in Atlanta and Miami. Altogether, Waymo says that its active deployments carry out more than 200,000 paid autonomous trips per week.

As it continues to expand across the U.S., Waymo will continue to work towards its core mission of being the world’s most trusted driver. So far, its fleet of robotaxis have collectively driven more than 50 million miles, with the company more broadly representing its commitment to safety through its collision and insurance data, which it says demonstrates the impact of Waymo One in the cities where the service currently operates.
