The Volkswagen Group of America’s autonomous mobility subsidiary, Volkswagen ADMT, has announced a new, long-term, strategic partnership with Uber Technologies.
Together, the companies are aiming to deploy a fleet comprised of thousands of all-electric, fully autonomous ID. Buzz AD vehicles within multiple U.S. markets over the next decade, beginning with Los Angeles, CA.
Testing for this fleet has been confirmed to take place later in 2025, with both companies expecting to roll out the Los Angeles service in 2026. Across this time, the autonomous-ready ID. Buzz vehicles will utilize onboard human operators to refine the AV technologies featured on the vehicles and ensure they can operate safely.
Throughout the testing and initial rollout phases, both Volkswagen and Uber stressed that each step in the overall process will only proceed once they have gained the necessary regulatory approvals to both test and launch their AVs.
While detailing its collaboration with Uber, Volkswagen announced that further support will come from MOIA, its autonomous mobility brand. Within it, MOIA will provide its integrated solution for autonomous driving which includes both the ID. Buzz AD and software-based system for the deployment on the Uber platform.
