Japan: ZENRIN aims for 3D map for autonomous driving by 2018

ZENRIN in Japan says it will launch a 3D map for autonomous drivnig by 2018.

ZENRIN has already started providing the 3D mapping to carmakers for testing and commercialisaion is aimed for 2018. The 3D mapping supports automated driving by acting as an extra sensor if radar and cameras are blaocked by obstacles or bad weather.

The 3D mapping was produced for the Japanese road network using a specially equipped measurement vehicle equipped with cameras and lasers. Data includes pavement markings and roadside signals.
