Tempe police has released video footage of the fatal crash involving an Uber autonomous SUV. The crash occurred near Mill Avenue and Curry Road (Arizona) around 10 p.m. on Sunday night.

The video comprises two parts showing two different camera angles – one front-facing covering the view of  the road, and one facing the Uber safety driver. These individual streams were compiled as a single 22-second video which was posted on Tempe Police Department’s official Twitter handle.

The video shows how the Uber’s self-driving SUV (a Volvo XC90) failed to stop or take any evasive manoeuvre before crashing into 42-year old Elaine Herzberg, who appears to be jaywalking with her bicycle. After the crash, Elaine was taken to a hospital where she succumbed to her injuries and passed away later that night.

The Uber self-driving operator (Rafaela Vasquez, 44) who is sitting behind the wheel of the self-driving test car is seen looking down seconds before looking up in shock when the car hits Elaine.

We will update this article as and when we receive further information from the ongoing police investigation.
