Lyft and Motional have launched a driverless IONIQ 5-based robotaxi on Lyft’s network in Las Vegas. It marks the latest step towards the launch of a jointly operated driverless ride-hailing service, which is expected to commence operations in 2023 and scale to multiple cities across the U.S. The two companies have been providing autonomous robotaxi services in Las Vegas since 2018.
Both companies have said that the IONIQ 5 robotaxi will provide Lyft’s customers with a custom user experience designed around a fully autonomous journey. Here, riders will be able to control their ride without assistance from a driver.
Upon the robotaxi’s arrival, users can unlock its doors through the Lyft app and start the ride. Inside, they can contact customer support from a dedicated Lyft AV app, which itself provides an in-ride display tailored to autonomous ridesharing. Motional and Lyft plan to make these new user features available to the wider public on the launch of their driverless service next year.
