The 2017-18 Mercedes-Benz GLC, a midsize luxury SUV, earns the highest award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, thanks to good ratings in all the IIHS crashworthiness tests, a superior-rated standard front crash prevention system and available good- or acceptable-rated headlights.
This is the first time the GLC, introduced in the 2016 model year, has been put through all IIHS evaluations.
To earn the Top Safety Pick+ award, a vehicle must have good ratings in all five crashworthiness tests — small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints — an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention and an acceptable or good headlight rating.
The GLC comes with a standard front crash prevention system that earns a superior rating. The vehicle avoided collisions in IIHS track tests at 12 mph and 25 mph.
The optional curve-adaptive LED headlights earn a good rating, and the optional static LED headlights rate acceptable. The base halogen headlights are marginal.
